Office move lift-off

What a weekend!

Nothing, nothing prepares you for the sheer logistical nightmare of putting things in boxes, putting boxes in a van, and going somewhere else. I am never, ever, going to consider myself superior just because I work in an office and can write whole sentences. Anyone who can get things from A to B without a crisis is my new hero.

As you have probably guessed, this weekend was move-the-office weekend. It took the whole two days, but I am now writing from my new desk in a very comfy office in the heart of London. Hurrah.

So what was actually interesting about the move? I think I learned two things here.

Firstly, moving office is a bit like earning money. However much money you earn, you’ll always manage to spend it. Similarly, however much preparation you put into packing and organising, it will always be a last-minute rush, and you’ll wonder how on earth you managed it. Well, that’s my experience anyway…

Secondly, a handy tip. I know it’s good practice to change suppliers every now and then (especially with credit cards), but for the sake of a few pence, it sometimes pays to stick with a supplier. My move was a case in point.

Thanks to the vagaries of the relationships between internet providers, installers, BT and everyone else who has a stake in your internet connection, it takes up to 10 days to get an internet connection live. Mine is due to switch on sometime today. Which is great- but not much good since I started work at 9 today.

Luckily, I have remained with my previous internet provider (Mistral). Whilst the new account wasn’t active, the circuit between the office and the exchange was fully provisioned. As soon as our network was plugged in, we had perfect internet access, using the old account settings from the old office. Very handy; and only possible if you stick with the same company. It’s a small benefit, but a nice little bonus nevertheless.

One more thing. All work and no play really does make Jack a dull boy. I haven’t had a day off in ages thanks to this moving lark, so despite the fact that there’s lots of catching up to do, I am definitely taking some midweek time off. As the lady in the advert says: because I’m worth it!
